Moving to California gave me much more free hands to choose a daily driver
according to my liking. I guess I'm of the type they would call a
"conservative buyer", or even "the dying kind". Anyhow, to feel comfortable
behind the wheel of my car-to-be, I limited my options to model names like
Crown Victoria, Gran Marquis, Town Car, Impala, Roadmaster, and Fleetwood.
Out of these, the Fleetwood emerged as the victor, due to its luxurious
ride, nice LT-1 powerplant, and maybe partly because of my general liking
of Cadillacs of the past. Finding an example in good condition turned out
to be not that trivial a task, as the Fleetwood accounted for less than 10%
of Cadillac's yearly sales, and I had to limit my search for model years
'94-'96, as they are the only ones to come with LT-1 power. After some
unsuccessful trips to see cars, I was able to locate this particular car
from the daughter of the now-deceased original owner. My empirical findings
proved the theory that the elderly gentlemen were pretty much the only
prospective buyers for these dinosaurs, when they were new. I can't
understand what's wrong with the world nowadays. Anyway, I've been very
pleased with the car, it provides an extremely comfortable ride, and the
LT-1 engine gives brisk performance combined with excellent fuel mileage
on the highway. Other added benefits are the "commanding presence" and
the "uncompromised substance", both of which come standard with the GM
D-body.
